June 3rd Martyrs Day.

Martyrs day in Uganda is celebrated every 3rd of June every year. It is a public holiday on the national calendar, government office and private business will not open to commemorate this important day.

The Uganda Martyrs

23 young men of the Anglican faith and 22 Catholic young men that had converted to Christianity in the kingdom of Buganda met their fate when they were murdered execution style on 31st January 1885 and 27th January 1887. With absolute commitment to the lordship of Jesus Christ the young martyrs would not bow to denounce their founded faith in the hope to come. Although pressured to revert from Christianity and follow traditional beliefs, the Uganda martyrs chose to hold their faith in Jesus Christ.

Death of the Uganda Martyrs

The orders that saw the Uganda Martyrs executed came from then the king of Buganda Kingdom Mwanga II who was a Muslim. In 1886 Mwanga gives the order that the execution be carried out for young Martyrs. Some source elude to killings of both Christian and Muslim converts;  while different other sources denote only of Anglican and Catholic martyrs. Joseph Mukasa, was the first to be executed on 15 November 1885, later between 25 May and 3 June 1886, several executions occurred as Mwanga instructed Twenty-two young men, who were devout Catholics were burned alive at Namugongo in 1886.
